Weldy Returns to Win Column During $5,000 Southern Open

Atlanta, GA - July 3-4, 1965 - After a three-year absence from the win column, veteran PPA Pro, Lee Weldy of Savannah, GA set the pace for the two-day 144 hole tourney. The tall, lanky Georgian bewildered his 139 opponents by backing up 29's on his first two rounds with an even more amazing 28 and adding 32 to give him a first day total of 118, 26-under par. His nearest competitors were Bobby Agee of Jacksonville, FL and Ron Slocumb of Columbus, GA both with 123.

The field led off the day under sunny skies and lightning fast carpets. However, midway through the 144 holes, a heavy thunderstorm halted play and sent players looking for cover. The topic dominating conversation was not the rain, but Weldy's magnificent start.

After another hour's delay, the field went back to work, but at no time, rain or shine, was Weldy's lead seriously challenged. In the second day of competition, Lee got off to a shaky start with a mediocre 34 and found his lead dwindling. He soon settled down and although the lead changed hands a couple of times, his remaining rounds of 28-31 and 32 gave him a victorious score of 243, 45-under par.

Finishing one stroke off the pace were Lehman Key of Lake Charles, LA and John Roessner of Indianapolis, IN. Roessner, the 1962 PPA Amateur National Champion came out of nowhere the second day by firing declining scores of 32-31-28 and 25 for a second day total of 28-under par.

Making their first bid for recognition in a major PPA tournament were LPPA member Evelyn Strickland of Macon, GA and Faye Duncan of Greenville, SC.

In the amateur division, 23 tough youngsters clashed for the Southern Open Amateur Title and the first-place trophy. Coming out on top was Jimmy Bryan of Atlanta with a 38-under par, 250. Second place went to Jerry Woosley of Jacksonville. He was four strokes off the pace with a 254.
