Neil Connor Captures Durham Open Title

Durham, NC - June 17-18, 1961 - Slender Neil Connor, 19-year old collegian from Greenville, SC, captured his second title in three tournaments on the Professional Putters Association $40,000 summer tour when he swept the Durham Open here Saturday and Sunday, June 17-18.

Connor, defending National Champion, blazed around the 144-hole distance in 42 under par 246 to nose out youthful Daryl Freeman of Bristol, Tenn., and veteran Bob Williamson of Jacksonville, Fla., by one stroke.

Connor, who won the Orlando, Fla., Open two weeks ago, pocketed the first place prize of $1,000 to give him a total cash winnings of $2,100 in 21 days of the cross country circuit which leads to Arlington, Va., Saturday and Sunday, June 24-25, for a $2,500 tournament.

The next in the series of 1961 PPA tournaments will be held in Arlington, VA on June 24-25 at the Putt-Putt Golf Course located at 4401 Wilson Blvd. The entry fee for this tournament is $6.00. Qualifying rounds will begin promptly at 2:00 PM. All pros must be registered prior to this time. The recommended hotel is the Clarendon Hotel, 3824 Wilson Blvd.
