Don Posey Wins $1,000 in Winston-Salem

Winston-Salem, North Carolina - 16 July 1960 - Newcomer to
the PPPGA tourney circuit, Don Posey, was victorious over 110 other tournament
entrants on his home course in Winston-Salem, North Carolina during the PPPGA
$2,000 tournament held there on July 16, 1960. Posey shot a 22 under par with
his 194 for the 108 hole route for first place money of $1,000. Frank Holt,
top PPPGA money winner and John Connor of Greenville, South Carolina trailed
to split second and third money with their 197 aggregate, good for $350 each.
This brings Holt's total PPPGA earnings up to the $2,965 mark.
The Winston-Salem Putt-Putt was also the scene of another
tournament held in conjunction with the PPPGA national, for the sports
writers. Jack Horner, Sports Editor of the Durham Herald, copped first place
with his 74 for the 36 hole route to be awarded a matched set of Swing-Weight
golf clubs. Second place went to Smith Barrier, Sports Editor of the
Greensboro Daily News, who shot a 83, good for a $50 gift certificate from
Southern Golf Distributors. A gift certificate of $25 went to Horace Billings,
Sports Editor of the Salisbury, North Carolina Post, for third place, with
fourth place earnings of a $10 gift certificate going to Max Ulrich, Sports
Director, WSJL-TV, Winston-Salem, North Carolina. Irwin Smallwood gained
honorable mention for shooting the most Holes-In-One for the tournament.
Smallwood, Golf Editor of the Greensboro, North Carolina Daily News, shot a
total of 8 Holes-In-One.
