Lee Weldy Cops First Place in $1,000 Tournament

Fayetteville, NC - 27 August 1960 - Lee Weldy, 22 year old Savannah, Georgia pro fired a 19 under par, 197, for the 108 hole route of the final PPPGA tournament of the 1960 season in Fayetteville, North Carolina on August 27th, 1960.

Weldy's precision netted him first place money of $500 in the $1,000 tourney. Neil Connor of Greenville, South Carolina finished second for $250 with his 199. Hickory pro, Eddie Anderson, shot a 200 for third place money of $100. Pre-tourney favorite, Earl Fritts, finished out of the money with a 213, with Frank Holt, another top pick finishing in a tie for 10th place with Ralph Sapp of Augusta, Georgia with 208s, good for $5.00.

However, Frank Holt still remains top money winner at the close of the season with $4,101.66 in prize money to his credit for 1960. A total of $3,727.50 has been accumulated by the 1960 National Champion, Neil Connor, for second place money winner of the year. News of the bigger-than-ever PPPGA tournament schedule will be forthcoming to all pros in the near future for the 1961 season.

Top Pros to Compete on Television

On September 15th, 1960 in Winston-Salem, North Carolina the TV cameras will begin rolling, recording on film the $5,200 Pro Championship Putting Series of the Week to be released in the spring of 1961. First match will show Neil Connor, 1960 National Champion of Greenville, SC, and Frank Holt of Savannah, Georgia, leading money winner, battling for first place of $1,000. Second place finisher will receive $300. Other pros competing in this series will be Earl Fritts of Houston, Texas, Ron Nixon of Columbus, Georgia and Bob Williamson of Jacksonville, Florida, all top money winning PPPGA pros.
