The PPA Regretfully Relays the Death of
Former PPA Member Gary Reece

Gary Reece

26 July 2010 - It is with sadness that we relay the news of the passing of former PPA member Gary Reece.  Gary Reece joined the Amateur division of the PPA in 1977.   Gary was diagnosed with Lymphoma about three and a half years ago.  He had a bone marrow transplant that appeared to have saved his life.   Just last month he was told he was cancer-free, but over the last 2 weeks he took a turn for the worse.  He passed away this morning from his illness.   He was 51.

His family will celebrate his life Friday, with a viewing from 5 pm to 8 pm and his funeral at 8 p.m. at Nurre Funeral Home on Main Street in Amelia. Gary's former employer also has set up a fund to help the family with expenses. It's the Gary Reece Memorial Fund, c/o Jobs Plus, 1625 Vine Street, Cincinnati OH 45202.

Jay Klapper Dominates Field to Successfully Defend PPA Northern Open Title in Warren, OH

18 July 2010 - Warren, OH - The PPA National Tour travelled to the picturesque and sprawling Warren, OH Putt-Putt Fun Center to contest the fourth event on the 2010 PPA National Tour schedule, the 144-hole PPA Northern Open, hosted jointly by the PPA Great Lakes and Indiana Tours. Course owners Renea and Ed Ackerman graciously welcomed the tour to their immaculately-maintained course # 3 layout, considered by pundits of the sport to be one of the country's truest tests of putting skill. Mother Nature ferociously defended the course from low scoring, however, as scorching mid-summer heat and sunshine resulted in maximal fluffing of the course's backwards carpet fibers and violent, unpredictable Saturday afternoon winds baffled many in the field.

Jay Klapper

In 2009, 2005 PPA National Champion Jay Klapper of Lawrenceville, GA established a new all-time PPA 144-hole scoring record en route to an emphatic eight-stroke victory in the PPA Northern Open. Klapper, who fittingly is to be inducted into the PPA Hall of Fame in September 2010, brought the same laser focus to Warren for his PPA Northern Open title defense. After seizing a five-stroke lead at the end of the first day of play, Klapper extended his lead to eight strokes with two rounds remaining and ultimately coasted to a dominant six-stroke triumph. With solid, steady rounds of 26, 26, 28, 25, 24, 25, 26, and 28, Klapper posted a 144-hole total of 208 to earn his first victory of the 2010 PPA season. Predictably, 2009 VA State Champion Rick Rybaczek, a renowned wind specialist, matched Klapper at 103 for the low 72-hole score of the tournament's second day to notch runner-up honors at 214. At 216, 2007 PPA National Champion Rick Baird recorded his third third-place finish in four 2010 PPA National Tour events and as a result sprung to the top of the 2010 PPA National Tour points standings. PPA Hall of Fame member Roger Beckerman charged the clubhouse with a final-round 25 to secure fourth position at 221. A three-way, fifth-place tie at 222 included prohibitive pre-tournament favorite Kevin Lacey, 2000 Great Lakes Tour Champion Rick Alessi, and first-round leader Jeff Carr. PPA Hall of Fame legend Daryl Freeman used a timely eighth-round 24 to move into a tie for eighth position with 2009 PPA Eastern Open Champion Greg Newport at 223. Despite only having joined the professional ranks several weeks earlier, 2009 Northern Open APA Champion Brandon Davis manufactured an inspired second-day comeback, shooting 105 for the final day of play to round out the top ten finishers at 224 and garner the praise of 1990 PPA National Champion Steve "Finman" Haeseker.

Randal Smith

The amateur division results mirrored those of the professional division, as Randal Smith of Reidsville, NC overwhelmed the amateur field with a decisive six-stroke victory. When the University of North Carolina-Greensboro Dean's List student returns to classes later this summer, he certainly will be able to pen an impressive essay about "what he did on his summer vacation." Since reverting to amateur status in 2010 following a lengthy and fruitful professional career, Smith has been the dominant amateur force in the country, having won eight 2010 amateur division titles, including the 2010 Southern and Eastern Opens. Snatching the tournament lead permanently after 54 holes of play, Smith entered the second day of action with a six-stroke advantage and built a nine-stroke lead with one round remaining. Smith prudently played conservatively in the final round to earn a six-stroke triumph. With rounds of 27, 29, 27, 27, 25, 27, 26, and 30, Smith carded a 144-hole total of 218. In the battle for second place, first-round leader Bonnie White outlasted second-round leader Joey Graybeal to secure runner-up honors at 224. At 226, Graybeal settled for his third third-place finish in as many starts on the 2010 National Tour schedule. 2008 Ray Browning Memorial APA Champion Barb Mingo opened the final day of play by firing the amateur division's tournament-low round of 23 on her way to completing the event in fourth position at 236. Don Mathews, who carded the amateur division's low round of the first day with a fourth-round 24, and 2008 Northern Putting Tour APA Medal Play Champion Rick Ossenfort tied for fifth place at 239 and split the final amateur division expense reimbursement spot awarded in the tournament.

Joel Baker Masters Enigmatic New Carpets of Roanoke, VA to Capture 2010 PPA Eastern Open

20 June 2010 - Roanoke, VA - The PPA National Tour held the third event on its 2010 schedule, the PPA Eastern Open, on course # 2 at the beautiful Roanoke, VA Putt-Putt Fun Center. Former PPA professional and course owner David Mitchell and his staff graciously welcomed the tour to the facility for the two-day, 144-hole event which was hosted by the Virginia PPA Tour. Throughout the weekend players endured baking equatorial heat and sunshine which caused the course's three-month-old backwards carpet fibers to rise with greater fury than that of an old man attempting to return soup in a New York delicatessen. A wide range of field scoring resulted.

Joel Baker

1979 PPA National Player of the Year and first-day co-leader Joel Baker performed masterfully throughout the event, seizing sole possession of the tournament lead after five rounds. Despite second-day charges by multiple players, Baker would not surrender that lead. With victory in hand, the affable accountant from Arlington, TX laid up the final three holes of the event for tap-in deuces to secure a two-stroke win. The foundation for Baker's popular triumph most likely was laid on the back nines of his first six rounds, as the 1991 PPA National Championship runner-up played those 54 holes in an astounding 40-under-par. The Gold 49er-wielding Baker carded rounds of 23, 27, 24, 24, 24, 26, 26, and 27 for a 144-hole total of 201, giving him his second victory of the 2010 PPA season and first PPA National Tour title since capturing the 1991 PPA National Team Championship in Memphis, TN.

At 203, PPA Hall of Fame member Greg Ward continued his dominating 2010 PPA National Tour campaign. Ward added a second-place finish in the 2010 PPA Eastern Open to his resume of a victory at the 2010 PPA Western Open and runner-up finish in the 2010 PPA Southern Open. Roanoke local standout and first-day co-leader Dennis Biesma recorded the best PPA National Tour finish of his professional career, using his extensive local course knowledge and experience to capture third-place honors at 204. Predictably, reigning VA State Champion Rick Rybaczek employed his well-chronicled hard-and-straight putting philosophy to negotiate the course's fluffing carpets brilliantly, firing 205 to complete the event in fourth position. 2003 PPA National Champion Robert Johnson entered the seventh round of the tournament mired in a tie for 17th place. However, with a sizzling seventh-round 23 followed by a tournament-low final-round 21, the wily veteran from Lake Wylie, SC pole-vaulted into fifth place at 206. Defending champion Greg Newport shot 207 to join reigning PPA National Doubles Champion Nate Nichols and PPA Hall of Fame legend Daryl Freeman in a tie for sixth position.

mott.jpg (25448 bytes)
Randal Smith

In contrast to the anticlimactic closing holes of the tournament in the professional division, competition in the amateur division ended with final-hole drama. 2010 Southern Open APA Champion Randal Smith relinquished a four-shot seventh-round lead, stepping to the tee on the event's final hole tied with charging two-time APA National Champion and Roanoke local stalwart Clayton Craft, Esq. and needing an ace to secure victory. Relying upon his signature tenacity and grit, Smith struck a perfect putt which found the bottom of the cup on the challenging 18th hole. With steady rounds of 27, 28, 25, 24, 27, 27, 26, and 27 for a 144-hole score of 211, the University of North Carolina-Greensboro Dean's List student earned his second-consecutive major national amateur title and seventh amateur division triumph of the 2010 season. Despite crafting a stellar and timely final-round 24, Craft settled for runner-up honors at 212. Playing in only his second-career National Tour event, Tennessean Joey Graybeal once again contended late for a major title, ultimately notching his second-consecutive National Tour amateur division third-place finish at 218. 2009 Western Open APA Champion Mickey DeLucca completed the event in fourth position at 219. At 222, Roanoke local players Mark Smith and James LeBrun, who with a fourth-round 22 fired the low round of the tournament in the amateur division, rounded out the amateur division's top five finishers.

Tony Varnadore Outduels Greg Ward to Capture PPA Southern Open By Two Strokes

16 May 2010 - Burlington, NC - The PPA National Tour ventured to the historic and picturesque Burlington, NC Putt-Putt Fun Center to contest the second event on its 2010 schedule, the two-day, 144-hole PPA Southern Open, hosted and run by the PPA Southern Tour. In the months leading up to the event, course owners Brian Patterson and Bobby Gilmore and their staff worked diligently to prepare course # 1 for the tournament weekend. As a result, a field of 49 professionals and 31 amateurs were treated to a course and grounds which were in immaculate shape and playing conditions which were ideal. A full spectrum of weather conditions throughout the weekend, however, contributed to a wide range of scoring in both divisions.

Tony Varnadore

Through six rounds of the event, a number of players remained in contention for the PPA Southern Open title. In the seventh and eighth rounds, however, the tournament developed into a heated two-player duel between reigning PPA National Champion Tony Varnadore and PPA Hall of Fame member Greg Ward, who has wielded the PPA's hottest wand in the 2010 season. A winner was not determined until the tournament's 144th and final hole, which Varnadore aced to earn a hard-fought, two-stroke victory. Varnadore fired rounds of 25, 25, 27, 25, 24, 23, 23, and 22 for an eye-popping 144-hole total of 194 to earn the second major PPA National Tour individual title of his career. Ward settled for runner-up honors at 196. 2009 VA State Champion Rick Rybaczek fashioned a heroic second-day charge to tie first-day leader Rick Baird for third place at 202. At 204, 2006 PPA National Doubles Champion Randy Orr completed the event in fifth position. 2003 PPA National Champion Robert Johnson finished sixth at 205. A two-way, seventh-place tie at 207 included 2006 PPA National Champion Brad Lebo and 2005 PPA National Champion Jay Klapper. Deadlocked in ninth place at 209, reigning Southern Putting Tour Champion Allen Wall, 2007 PPA Senior National Champion Frank Warren, and 1997 PPA National Champion Randy Reeves rounded out the top ten finishers.

mott.jpg (25448 bytes)
Randal Smith

In the amateur division, the second day of the event quickly morphed into an epic battle between three contestants. First-day leader Randal Smith, who entered the last round in third place and two strokes off of Mark Lawson's lead, crafted a timely final-round 24 to force a playoff with Lawson as the duo tied at the end of regulation play with a 144-hole total of 215. No more than two strokes separated Smith and Lawson at any point beyond the third round of the tournament. In a tightly-contested 18-hole playoff, Lawson seized a two-stroke lead at six-under par after ten holes. Smith fought back valiantly with four unanswered aces on holes 11-14 to build a two-stroke lead with four holes remaining. After Lawson birdied the tedious 15th hole to cut his deficit to one stroke, Smith aced the final three holes to ultimately win the playoff by a score of 25-28. The triumph was the first major National Tour APA title for Smith, who enjoyed a fruitful PPA professional career prior to reverting to amateur status for the 2010 season. Tennessean Joey Graybeal played impressively in his first-career national tournament, having taken possession of the lead after the fifth and sixth rounds before falling into a third-place tie at 219 with Wilson, NC standout Johnny Brown, who orchestrated an inspired clubhouse run in the event's final two rounds. At 223, Lake Charles, LA's Tony Newcomb completed the tournament in fifth position at 223.

Greg Ward Fires 69 for Final Three Rounds to Win His Third Career PPA Western Open in Killeen, TX

18 April 2010 - Killeen, TX - The PPA National Tour ventured to course # 2 of the beautiful and sprawling Killeen, TX Putt-Putt Fun Center to contest the initial event on the 2010 PPA National Tour schedule, the two-day, 144-hole PPA Western Open. Course manager Todd Fox and his staff worked diligently preparing the course in the weeks leading up to the event to create ideal playing conditions. As a result, the unique covered course layout provided a highly skillful test for the players which featured many speed-dependent holes and significant penalties for imprecise tee shots.

Greg Ward

PPA Hall of Fame member Greg Ward of Loganville, GA, the PPA's all-time leader in career wins and money earnings, continued his stellar start to the 2010 PPA season in which he already had captured three tour titles, including a dominating ten-stroke victory in the 54-hole PPA Western Tour event in Killeen, TX several days earlier. Mired in fifth place and trailing 90-hole leader Rainey Statum by five strokes at the end of five rounds, Ward carded brilliant closing rounds of 22, 23, and 24 to cruise to a five-stroke triumph and capture his third career PPA Western Open title. Ward posted rounds of 25, 29, 22, 27, 27, 22, 23, and 24 for an 89-under-par, 144-hole total of 199 to earn the $600.00 winner's check. Statum settled for runner-up honors at 204. 2007 PPA National Champion Rick Baird and 2006 PPA National Champion Brad Lebo shared third place at 205. At 207, 2009 PPA Western Tour Player of the Year Wade Sahmel finished in fifth position.

Pat Simpson

In the amateur division, Pat Simpson of Denton, TX successfully negotiated a wild roller coaster ride en route to his first career PPA National Tour amateur division title. After establishing a four-stroke overnight lead with a 72-hole total of 108, Simpson suffered a fifth-round 34 to tumble into fourth place, six strokes behind 90-hole amateur leader Dwain Willett. In the seventh round, however, Simpson rebounded brilliantly with a tournament-low 21 to soar back to the top of the amateur leaderboard. A final-round 26 gave Simpson an emphatic eight-stroke victory. Simpson recorded rounds of 28, 24, 26, 30, 34, 28, 21, and 26 for a final 144-hole total of 217. By virtue of a closing-round 26, 2005 Texas Tour Tournament Players Champion Steve Tanton surged into second place. Sixth-round leader Charles Cox finished third at 227. Willett completed the event in fourth position at 229. At 231, 2007 Texas Tour APA State Champion Mike Huckaby rounded out the amateur division top five. The final of the nine amateur division expense reimbursement spots allocated in the tournament fell at a score of 238. The six qualification spots awarded in the amateur division for the 2010 PPA Tournament Players Championship went to Simpson, Willett, Huckaby, 2007 APA National Doubles Champion Adam Sahmel, Tony Newcomb, and 2007 Northern Open APA Champion Ken Stanfill.

Jay Klapper to be Inducted into
PPA Hall of Fame

28 March 2010 - The PPA is proud to announce that 2005 PPA National Champion Jay Klapper will be the 42nd inductee to the PPA Hall of Fame.  Jay will be inducted during the Week of the Nationals in Lynchburg, Virginia this September.

Extended Stay America Named Official Hotel of the 2010 PPA Nationals

28 February 2010 - The Extended Stay America Hotel located just 5 miles away from the Putt-Putt Golf and Games facility in Lynchburg has been named the official hotel of the 2010 PPA National Championship. We have been given excellent rates of $49.99 for a double and $46.99 for a single. All rooms offer a kitchenette. These rates are available during the PPA Nationals and will also be honored for the March and August Virginia State Tour events as well.  To obtain these rates, you must call the hotel directly at 434-239-8863 and specifically state you are with Putt-Putt or the PPA. The hotel address is 1910 University Blvd, Lynchburg VA 24502 and is very near Liberty University.

PPA TV Shows from 1960-80 Coming to DVD

6 January 2010 - As you may be aware, the PPA TV show from 1981 through 1994 were converted to DVD and are now available for those who like to have these shows. The cost of converting these shows from their broadcast video tapes into a format ready for DVD was paid for through 54 contributions of $100 each in exchange for copies of these TV shows on DVD. The work to convert the PPA TV shows from 1960 to 1980 has now begun and I am again soliciting people to contribute to the conversion of these shows onto DVD in exchange for copies of the shows on DVD.

The TV shows from 1980 and earlier are on 2" video tape which costs $200 per 30 minute TV show to convert to MiniDV tape which is then read onto a PC and burned to DVD. This cost is considerably higher than that for the 1" video tape and newer formats for the 1981 and later TV shows. Consequently I am asking for a $200 contribution in exchange for copies of all the 1960 to 1980 TV shows that can be converted to DVD.

There are between 70 and 80 shows from 1960 through 1980 which may be available on DVD if enough sponsors can be found. At present 29 of these shows have already been converted and will be available on DVD. The remaining 40 to 50 shows (depending upon how many of the tapes are still payable) are to be converted from 2" video tape. As of early January, roughly 24 of these shows have been sponsored and the cost of converting the 2" tape is covered. I am looking for an additional 20 to 25 sponsors to cover the conversion costs for the remaining shows. For your $200 contribution, you will get a copy of all the shows from 1960 through 1980 that are converted to DVD. I will be covering the costs of the DVD blanks, DVD cases, insert printing and delivery which is expect to be roughly $25 to $30 per person.

If you are interested in sponsoring this effort to archive and make available these TV shows, please email me at pneumann@proputters.com.  I can provide more details including a listing of the TV shows that have already been converted and a current list of the shows that are expected to be converted from 2" video tape. If there is sufficient interest and Rick Rybaczek has time, I can provide a few short video clips from these TV shows to give everyone a chance to see what these shows look like.

Thanks for your time in reading this and I look forward to hearing from a number of you. Best wishes for everyone in 2010. I hope to be back out on the course and playing in 2010.

Sincerely,
Peter Neumann

51st Annual PPA National Championship

6 December 2009

Dear Fellow Members,

Joe Aboid

As previously announced, the 51st annual PPA National Championship will be played in Lynchburg, VA, September 13-18, 2010.

The week long tournament events include the Proputters.com, TPC, Doubles and Seniors National Championship. The APA National Championship will be an eight round, two day tournament while the Pro division will be a three day, 10 round tournament that includes taping of the final two rounds that will produce a 30 minute TV show. This show will be made available to all Putt-Putt owners for airing in their respective markets.

"It's been 6 years since the last TV show production in Richmond, VA", recalls Joe Aboid, PPA Commissioner. "With the support of all Putt-Putt Course Owners, we are producing a Championship highlight show that will feature the final two rounds of the tournament and the crowning of the PPA National Champion. We are very pleased that APA member and our local Lynchburg ABC Sports Director, Dennis Carter will again be the lead commentator."

The most recent National Championship played in Lynchburg was in 2001. At that time, Greg Ward tamed the 54 hole facility with a 12 round score of 312, 120 under par. Since that event, the Lynchburg facility has undergone a facelift, reducing the number of holes to 36. This unique facility has only a handful of the 2001 putting holes in their original design. Each of the holes has updated bump boards while many holes have two cups to challenge Lynchburg customers. Tony Varnadore and Larry Smith are reigning Pro and APA champions.

In addition the 2010 awards banquet will celebrate the year long award winners and include the presentation of the 2000-2009 Putter of the Decade.

As soon as possible, we will email to all players information on Lynchburg hotels along with tee off times.

Rainey Statum Earns 50th Career WPT Victory in Sudden Death Over Baldoza

Rainey Statum

30 May 2010 - Longview, TX - Rainey Statum continued his mastery over the 18 hole Longview Putt Putt course, as he defeated Mike Baldoza in sudden death after both players shot 23 under par, 85, for 54 holes of play. Brice Bergesen shot 10 under par, 26, for a 1 stroke lead over Lee Messinger after 18 holes of play. Jeffrey Smith shot 8 under par, 28, to hold a 1 stroke lead over Baldoza and Statum after the 2nd round of play. Both Statum and Baldoza shot rounds of 9 under par, 27, in the final round, as neither player could break clear of the other, to send the event to sudden death. With the victory, Statum claimed his 1st victory of the year, his first WPT victory since 2007 and his 50th career

Tony Newcomb

WPT victory, which increases his lead as number 1 in career WPT victories by 3 over Jeffrey Smith. Baldoza and Byron Kirby won qualifying spots for the WPT Championship in Lake Charles in October.

Tony Newcomb won his 3rd victory of the year by 4 strokes over Danny Tatum, shooting 23 under, 85. Newcomb's final score tied the score that Statum and Baldoza posted after 54 holes of play in the PPA Division. Had Newcomb been playing in the PPA Division, he would have participated in the sudden death even against Statum and Baldoza. Newcomb and Tatum shot 6 under par, 30, to share the lead after 18 holes of play. Newcomb shot a very nice 2nd round score of 9 under par, 27, to increase his lead to 2 strokes over Tatum. Newcomb furthered his lead over Tatum for the victory by shooting a final round score of 8 under par, 28. With the victory, Newcomb defended the title that he won in this tournament last year. Newcomb and Gary Plain won qualifying spots for the WPT Championship in Lake Charles in October.

29 May 2010 - Tyler, TX - On a gorgeous spring day with near record high temperatures, the Western Putting Tour returned to Tyler, Texas for a medal play tournament, followed by a match play event. In the first event of the day, 2009 WPT PPA Champion Jeffrey Smith shot 23 under par, 85, to best PPA Hall of Fame member Mike Baldoza by 3 strokes for his 3rd victory this season. Byron Kirby opened the tournament with an 8 under par, 28, to hold a 2 stroke lead over Smith, Baldoza and Randy Reeves. After the second round, Kirby and Smith were tied at 13 under par, 59. Smith fired an outstanding score of 10 under par, 26, for the victory, and his 47th career WPT victory, 2 victories shy of 1st place Rainey Statum. Baldoza and Reeves won qualifying spots for the WPT Championship in Lake Charles in October.

Charles Cox

Charles Cox won his 2nd WPT victory in 2010, shooting a 22 under par, 86, to out distance second place finisher Steve Tanton by 3 strokes. Cox shot an 8 under par, 28, to hold the 1st round lead by 1 stroke over Tyler Putt Putt Golf and Games Manager Gary Plain. Cox shot another round of 28 to hold a 4 stroke lead at 56 over three fellow competitors after 36 holes. Cox completed his tournament with a 6 under par 30 for the victory. This marks the 5th consecutive WPT tournament in which Tanton has finished as the runner-up. Cox and Gary Plain won qualifying spots for the WPT Championship in Lake Charles in October.

Danny Mac Is Back with One-Stroke Win Over Rick Baird In Virginia Putting Classic

23 May 2010 - Roanoke, VA - The Virginia PPA Tour held its second major championship of the 2010 season, the 72-hole Virginia Putting Classic, on course # 2 at the Roanoke, VA Putt-Putt Fun Center. Overnight rain showers gave way to bright sunshine for the 10:00 a.m. tee time. As a result, the mercurial new backwards carpet fibers of the course were in a state of flux throughout the tournament, rising to full attention in the afternoon's baking sunshine by tournament's end. A wide range of field scoring resulted. Amidst the much more ideal scoring conditions of the VA Putting Classic in April 2009, the professional scoring average on the Roanoke layout was 25.82 strokes per round. This season, professional division scoring rose to an average of 28.07 strokes per round.

Danny McCaslin

At 5:00 a.m. on the morning of the tournament, 1996 PPA Commissioner's Cup Champion Danny McCaslin made the impromptu decision to make the three-hour drive from his home near Cary, NC to enter the event. Less than ten hours later, the legend of Danny McCaslin grew to new heights. A prominent PPA professional in the 1990's, McCaslin spent most of the last decade focusing on his career on the rival USPMGA Tour, where during that period he captured three USPMGA Masters National Championships and a USPMGA U.S. Open title. McCaslin's attempted 2010 PPA comeback started sluggishly, with lackluster performances in White Lake, NC and Burlington, NC. McCaslin remained patient, however, and his arduous practice sessions of the past several months finally paid unexpected dividends. A pedestrian start to the tournament left McCaslin mired in a 17th-place tie at 28 after the opening round. After swaying his way to a remarkable 14 aces in the second round for a tournament-low round of 22, however, McCaslin pole-vaulted into a two-way tie for the lead at 50 with first-round leader Rick Baird. The winning instinct took over for McCaslin, as he produced a stellar Ben Crane-like third-round 24 to increase his lead to three strokes over Baird with a 54-hole total of 74. Undaunted, the recently white-hot Baird did his best to spoil the ending to the Cinderella story. Playing nine groups ahead of McCaslin, Baird orchestrated an inspired final-round run, acing the final five holes of the event to post a hard-fought fourth-round 24 and establish the clubhouse lead at a 72-hole score of 101. Cognizant of his situation, McCaslin began the last round strongly with an outward-nine score of 12. After aces on holes 10, 11, and 15, McCaslin needed just one more ace to secure victory. McCaslin left his tee shot on hole 16 a roll short of the cup, but rebounded with a sweet stroke on the 17th hole which found the bottom of the cup. Upon prudently laying up the final hole for a tap-in deuce, McCaslin celebrated his first PPA victory since winning the 1999 PPA Orange Lake Open. Despite a stellar bogey-free performance, Baird settled for runner-up honors at 101.

Two-time PPA Senior National Champion Bill Baus capped off a very solid weekend with a third-place finish at 104. Defending champion Tony Jackson played admirably in his attempted title defense, shooting 105 to complete the event in fourth position. At 107, PPA Hall of Fame legend Daryl Freeman finished fifth. A gaggle of players in a sixth-place tie at 108 included 2006 PPA National Champion Brad Lebo, 2009 Dogwood Open Champion Dennis Biesma, reigning PPA Eastern Open Champion Greg Newport, and 2008 GA State Champion Jeff Carr. 2006 GA State Champion Michael Hitt rounded out the top ten at 109. The final of the sixteen money spots awarded in the tournament fell at a 72-hole total of 113.

Randal Smith

In the amateur division, reigning PPA Southern Open APA Champion Randal Smith rode the momentum of his victory in the previous afternoon's tournament to yet another triumph. Smith dominated his amateur foes with rounds of 26, 26, 25, and 28 for a 72-hole total of 105, giving him a seven-stroke margin of victory and his sixth amateur division win of the 2010 season. Two-time APA National Champion and Roanoke local standout Clayton Craft, Esq. posted 112 to win the battle for second place. At 114, 1983 VA APA State Champion Mike Matthews conjured up yet another strong performance in a major tournament, completing the event in third position. A quartet of players tying for fourth place at 117 and earning the final amateur division expense reimbursement spots distributed in the tournament included 1999 VA APA State Champion Malcolm Shumaker, 2004 JPA National Champion John Petrie, Roanoke local player James LeBrun, and 2009 Dogwood Open APA Champion Bill Petrie.

Thomas Rawles Fires 77 to Return to Winner's Circle in Roanoke, VA

22 May 2010 - Roanoke, VA - The Virginia PPA Tour gathered to contest to the second of three weekend tournaments on course # 2 at the Roanoke, VA Putt-Putt Fun Center. For about an hour prior to the tee off time of the event, very heavy rain showers completely saturated the course's new, thick backwards carpet fibers and dampened the rails used for the course's many bank shots. Quite surprisingly, field scoring actually significantly improved over that of the day's earlier tournament despite the adverse and rapidly-changing course conditions.

Thomas Rawles

Tour veteran Thomas Rawles proved to be the most adept in the 28-player professional field at the afternoon guessing game, as he carded solid, steady rounds of 25, 26, and 26 for a 54-hole total of 77 to capture his first victory since September 2003, which fittingly also came on course # 2 in Roanoke, VA. Rejuvenated PPA Hall of Fame member Bill Kirby continued his recent strong play, posting a brilliant tournament-low second-round 22 and ultimately tying for second place at 78 with reigning PPA National Champion Tony Varnadore. At 79, second-round leader Robert Johnson completed the event in fourth position. A five-way, fifth-place tie at 80 included defending champion Bill Baus, PPA Hall of Fame legend Daryl Freeman, 2007 PPA National Champion Rick Baird, July 2008 Richmond, VA Local Player of the Month Vince Batten, and naturally-gifted 1997 PPA National Champion Randy Reeves. The last of the fourteen money spots allocated in the tournament fell at a 54-hole score of 83.

mott.jpg (25448 bytes)
Randal Smith

In the amateur division, reigning PPA Southern Open APA Champion Randal Smith stormed back with fury from a disappointing morning tournament performance. After opening the event with a lackluster round of 30, Smith manufactured an inspired clubhouse charge, firing final rounds of 25 and 24 to catch second-round leader Joey Graybeal and force an 18-hole playoff after the duo completed the tournament deadlocked at a 54-hole total of 79. Despite having joined the PPA's amateur ranks only eight days earlier, Graybeal already may have found his Lex Luthor in the amateur field. Less than one week earlier, Smith had wrestled a late lead from the pure-stroking Graybeal en route to the PPA Southern Open APA title. In this week's showdown, Smith and Graybeal completed the 18-hole playoff all square after each shot 30. The two gladiators matched respective deuces and aces on the first and second holes of sudden death. On the dangerous and fickle third hole, Smith struck a perfect tee shot which resulted in a hole-in-one. When Graybeal's ace effort slid by the hole, Smith notched his fifth amateur victory of the 2010 season. Reigning VA APA State Champion Conway Coffey shared third place with 2008 Southern Putting Tour APA Champion Ben Blake at 83. At 84, 2004 JPA National Champion John Petrie rounded out the amateur division's top five. The final of the six amateur division expense reimbursement spots awarded in the event came at a 54-hole total of 86.

Bill Baus Defeats Jeff Carr in Playoff For Victory in Roanoke, VA

22 May 2010 - Roanoke, VA - 22 May 2010 - Roanoke, VA - On an intermittently overcast and drizzly late Saturday morning, the Virginia PPA Tour held the first of three weekend tournaments on course # 2 at the Roanoke, VA Putt-Putt Fun Center. The course's newly-laid backwards carpets and freshly-painted rails provided a great challenge for the field of 29 professionals and 21 amateurs, many of whom were using the weekend's events as preparation for the PPA Eastern Open to be contested on the course on the weekend of June 19-20, 2010. Aces certainly proved to be at a premium, as the professional field averaged 28.43 strokes per round in the event. By comparison, in the analogous tournament on the Virginia Tour schedule in April 2009, the professional field averaged 26.94 strokes per round.

Bill Baus

Two-time PPA Senior National Champion Bill Baus opened the weekend with a sizzling tournament-low, first-round 24. Baus' subsequent rounds of 28 and 27 gave him a 54-hole total of 79, enough to force a playoff with 2008 GA State Champion Jeff Carr, who posted steady rounds of 26, 26, and 27. In a tightly-contested 18-hole playoff which was interrupted by sudden heavy rainfall, Carr opened up a two-stroke lead over Baus after 14 holes at 7-under par. Baus fought back valiantly, however, squaring the match with unanswered aces on the 15th and 16th holes. After the duo exchanged deuces on the 17th hole, Baus recorded a timely and rather fortuitous backdoor ace on the 18th hole. As Carr's ace effort failed to find the bottom of the cup, Baus earned his first victory of the 2010 PPA season by a final playoff score of 28-29. 2006 PPA National Champion Brad Lebo marked his 300th consecutive Virginia PPA Tour start by finishing in a three-way tie for third place at 81 with Roanoke local standout Dennis Biesma and 1995 PPA National Champion Bill Kirby. The final of the fifteen money spots awarded in the tournament fell at a 54-hole score of 85.

Clayton Craft

In the amateur division, two Roanoke local players soared to the top of the final amateur division leaderboard. Two-time APA National Champion Clayton Craft, Esq. celebrated the 35th victory of his decorated amateur career on his home course, crafting rounds of 26, 29, and 26 for a 54-hole total of 81 and a two-stroke triumph. The win was Craft's first of the 2010 season. Roanoke local stalwart James LeBrun notched runner-up honors at 83. A two-way, third-place tie at 84 included Don Mathews and 2004 JPA National Champion John Petrie. Bunched in a four-way, fifth-place tie at 86, Geoffrey Boyer, Ping C-67-wielding Wade Driskill, 2009 Dogwood Open APA Champion Bill Petrie, and second-round leader Randy Baldwin rounded out the top five amateur division finishers and earned the final amateur division expense reimbursement spots allocated in the tournament.

Michael Hitt Wins Southern Open Warm-up

Michael Hitt

13 May 2010 - Burlington, N.C. - The Southern Putting Tour held their first Thursday night tournament tour event in the five-year history of the tour in Burlington, NC on course one. Course Owner Brian Patterson always keeps the course in excellent shape and is always a gracious host. The weather was great for the thirty-two pros and twenty-one amateurs that competed that night.

The tournament’s first round yielded several low scores and was hotly contested. Brad Lebo led after the first round with a score of 23. A trio of players; Michael Hitt, Randy Reeves, and Greg Ward, were close behind with a scores of twelve under 24.

In the second round, Michael Hitt carded a 22 to take the lead at 46. Brad Lebo was close behind with a score of 47. In third place was Bill Baus at 50 with a pair of 25's.

The third round showed a good bit of movement with some very low scores. Michael Hitt was able to hold onto the lead with a third round score of 25, which gave him a final score of 71 and the victory. Robert Johnson made a great run with a final round 22, but came up three shots short with a score of 74. Greg Newport shot a 24 which gave him a final score of 75 for a third-place finish.

mott.jpg (25448 bytes)
Randal Smith

In the APA Division, Randal Smith shot a solid 25 in the first round for a one-stroke lead. Mickey DeLucca and Billy Caudle were in a tie for second with scores of 26.

In round two, Rodney Ashley caught fire and shot a 23 to take the lead at 50. Randal Smith shot a 27 to have a score of 52 which put him in second place. Ray Guthrie was in third with a score of 53.

The third round saw some movement on the leader board. Rodney Ashley had a difficult last round of 31 to finish at 81. Rodney finished in a third-place tie with Vanette Block. Randal Smith shot a 24 in round three to finish at 78. This was not enough for the win in regulation. Ray Guthrie shot a 25 to also finish at 78. An eighteen-hole play-off ensued between these two. Randal Smith was too much for Ray Guthrie at the end. Randal shot a 23 to Ray’s 26 to capture the victory.

The SPT would like to thank Brian Patterson and his staff for hosting the Southern Open warm-up tournament on this Thursday night. The PPA Southern Open will commence on Saturday, May 15th at Noon.

Pinotti Sweeps IPT Weekend, Russell Claims His First Win Of Year

9 May 2010 - Louisville, KY - Jerry Pinotti had a strong 2009 PPA season, highlighted by winning the National Doubles championship with Nate Nichols and later claiming the Indiana Putting Tour Match Play Championship.  The Louisville resident started 2010 looking for more as he returned to the site of his match play title from 2009 and won the IPT's six-round major on Course 3 at the Louisville Putt-Putt Golf & Games. Pinotti shot a 61-under par 155 to win by five shots over Indiana's Tom Morrison. Charlie Greenwalt was third at 163, Nichols fourth at 164 and Kevin Lacey fifth at 166 for the final cash spot.

mott.jpg (25448 bytes)
Tom Russell (APA) and Jerry Pinotti (PPA)

Often a low-scoring course for tour players, Course 3 was perhaps inspired by the toughness of its Course 1 neighbor and thus was not quite as ace-friendly as it has been in recent tourneys.  But early on, it was Cincinnati southpaw James Weber not getting that memo.  He came out on fire with a pair of 24's and led by four shots with a 48.  However, he would fade like a pair of 10-year old jeans and fall below the cash line at tourneys end.  Weber shot a 31 in the third round and was in a three-way tie for first at the halfway point with Pinotti and Morrison. Three other players stood at 82 - Lacey, Greenwalt and Bob Marcellino.

After a lunch break, Pinotti skated past the field with 26's in Rounds 4 and 5 to take a three-stroke lead over Morrison, his playing partner. Weber shot 30-31 to stumble out of the running.  In the final round, Morrison aced the first four holes to pull within a shot of Pinotti, and after an ace on 13, Morrison was still within one. However, an untimely miss on Hole 15 allowed Pinotti to reclaim a two-stroke margin. Pinotti aced the last five holes for a closing 24.

In the amateur division, it was Louisville's own Tom Russell winning on the same course he claimed the 2009 IPT Medal Play tourney on.  Russell shot a 53-under par 163 to hold off Brandon Davis by two shots.
Karen Raizor was third at 167.  Russell and Davis were tied with two rounds to go, but Russell shot a 26 to 30 for Davis. Russell shook off an early bogey in the final round for a 29 to hold on to the win.

Pinotti and Davis Defeat Wind and Fellow Players at Louisville

8 May 2010 - Louisville, KY - The Indiana Putting Tour reconvened May 8 for the opening tournament of the 2010 season as owner and player Tim Greenert welcomed the tour to the Louisville Putt-Putt Golf & Games.

mott.jpg (25448 bytes)
Brandon Davis (APA) and Jerry Pinotti (PPA)

Action began with a four-round tourney on the often fickle and dangerous Course 1. Sometimes baffling on a good day, Course 1 really showed its teeth today as the players battled cool temperatures and strong winds which turned the tournament into the Putt-Putt version of the British Open.  In the end, it was Louisville local star Jerry Pinotti making the rest of the field say Bollocks! as he used his home-course knowledge to win the tourney with a 35-under par 109.  Kevin Lacey, the 2008 PPA National Champion, was second at 112. Greenert took third with 114, and 1968 National Champion Bob Marcellino, another Louisville local, finished in fourth at 117 to take the last cash spot.

Pinotti, half of the 2009 PPA National Doubles champions, lapped the field early with a 24. Greenert shot a 25, and two other players had a 29 on the tough course.  Pinotti crafted 28's in Rounds 2 and 3. Lacey, with a third-round 26, was the only player to beat 28 in those two rounds. With one round to go, Pinotti had a four-stroke lead over Lacey and Greenert.  In the last round, Pinotti shot a steady 29 to turn away all challengers.  Marcellino carded a finishing 28 to clinch cash.

In the amateur division, high school junior Brandon Davis continued to add to his APA victory total with an eight-shot win. Currently learning how to drive a car, he continued his drive to be the best amateur in the country.  The 2009 IPT Player of the Year and match-play champion, Davis shot a 113, including a second-round 24. Rick Ossenfort was second at 121.

2010 PPA Rules Book
2010 PPA Rule Book in Adobe Acrobat Format

The 2010 PPA Rule Book (available for download) is unchanged from 2009. For any questions please contact Joe Aboid or a member of the Player advisory board (names are listed in this years book) for explanation.

Official PPA Golf Ball for 2010

The PPA golf ball rule will remain unchanged for the 2010 season. For the 2010 PPA tournament season, any golf ball that appears on the USGA conforming golf ball list published on January 6th, 2010 or on a subsequent listing during 2010 (list is updated on the first Wednesday of each month) will be legal for PPA practice and tournament play.

The 2004 PPA golf balls (Top Flite Strata Tour Soft) will continue to be legal for tournament play in 2010. PPA golf balls from 2003 and prior years are not legal for the 2010 PPA tournament season.  Please note that as of the beginning of this year, none of the Nike "Soft" balls were listed, thus none were legal for play in 2010.  That included the Nike Power Soft, and PD Soft golf balls.  As of May 2010, one of the PD Soft balls has reappeared on the list and is now legal.  As with any golf ball you wish to use, it is your responsibility to compare the pole markings to those on the USGA lists to make sure your ball is legal.

In addition, only white golf balls will be allowed and the only logo (besides the manufacturer's) that may appear on the golf ball is the PPA mark on the 2004 PPA golf balls.

Addendum to the 2010 PPA Rule Book

The following rule changes are effective immediately:

6. OFFICIAL BALL

All golf balls used in a PPA sanctioned tournament must be approved by the Tournament Director. Golf balls that will be approved are those that are white in color and listed at the web site of the USGA (linked from ProPutters.com) and any golf ball with the PPA logo from the year 2004 and after. Golf balls required by any sponsors of the tournament event must be used and purchased by all members. If a player is found to be playing with a non-conforming golf ball during a competitive round, the player shall be disqualified from that tournament.

12. CHANGING MEMBERSHIP STATUS

Players who request membership in the Pro Division agree to maintain their Pro status until the end of the calendar year, at which time players may revert to APA status. Any Pro desiring to revert to Amateur status after beginning his or her season as a Pro may do so by submitting his/her resignation in writing to the PPA. After reverting from Pro to Amateur status during a season, the Amateur may not become a member of the Pro Division again for a minimum of two (2) seasons defined as completing the current season and the following year's season.

Players that were members of the Pro Division at the end of last season who reverted to Amateur status at the beginning of this season agree to maintain their Amateur status until the end of the calendar year.  After completing a full season as an Amateur, the player will be allowed to become a member of the Pro Division the following season.
